Wireless – The Next Generation

Alliance for ActionThe New Jersey Alliance for Action, in collaboration with Fifth Gen Media hosted its first “Wireless – The Next Generation” seminar on Friday February 9th. The seminar was also done in cooperation with The Newark Regional Business Partnership, Meadowlands Regional Chamber of Commerce and the NJ Wireless Association.
Philip Beachem, President of the New Jersey Alliance for Action welcomed the attendees and introduced keynote speaker Rich Berliner, CEO  of Fifth Gen Media and Publisher of Connected Real estate magazine who talked about the state of Wireless today and gave a description of what new services and technologies are coming down the road in the next few years.
After his opening remarks, Mr. Berliner moderated a panel that described in greater detail  new wireless technologies such as 5G, IoT (Internet of Things), DAS (Distributed Antenna Systems), Public Safety for First Responders
(Land Mobile radio Service) and CBRS (Citizens Band Radio Service).  Other panelists came from a wide swath of the wireless community and included  Mike Collado from Corning, Dennis Rigney from Solid, Rick Good from Bird, Matt Thompson from Cobham and Bob Butchko from Fifth Gen Advisory Services. They explained the future of these new segments of the wireless ecosystem and explored how and when these game changing technologies will be deployed.

The second panel of the day was dedicated to the carrier and Tower owner landscape. Speakers included Sam Degado and Dan Dichter from Verizon, Fred Scalera from ATT and Peter Broy from Crown Castle. Most of the discussion centered around the deployment of small cells and how the “network densification” or capacity expansion is proceeding. Fred Scalera from ATT discussed the new FirstNet network that ATT is deploying and how that system will operate. Attendees heard that the future of wireless network coverage may well revolve around smaller, lower and closer nodes that will improve our service and allow for the new offerings.
The seminar concluded with a presentation by Chris Spadone from Converged Services discussing Smart Cities and what that will mean for the future.
“I think that based on the questions that were asked and the fact that the audience paid great attention to the speakers this was a success and something we want to do again for our members and partners” noted Alliance President Phil Beachem.
