On Wednesday, July 19, Corning announced that it acquired a leading in-building wireless provider, SpiderCloud Wireless.
The small cell innovator will help Corning further diversify its portfolio through its technology for DAS and by adding small cells to Corning’s platform. The technology SpiderCloud has developed allows small cells to act as a lone source to support a DAS—which means there is no need to spend on a base station.
SpiderCloud will join the Corning Optical Communications segment and Corning anticipates that SpiderCloud will help boost this segment’s annual sales, jumping from $3 billion in 2016 to $5 billion by 2020.
In April 2015, Corning purchased iBwave Solutions, a leading software creator for DAS that now reports to Corning Optical Communications. Since Corning purchased SpiderCloud, it can use this design software and SpiderCloud’s small cells to develop cost-efficient DAS.
Although few details regarding this acquisition have been revealed so far, it is said to be worth around $200 million to $250 million, according to an RCR Wireless article, citing sources.
“With the acquisition of SpiderCloud Wireless, we believe our combined product solutions will help drive optical convergence and enable the advantages of fiber-deep architectures within the Enterprise Local Area Network,” said Clark S. Kinlin, executive vice president of Corning Optical Communications in a statement.
Corning, a company focused on developing material science, has experience with communication networks including fiber optics, wireless, RF Connectivity, copper, and OEM Solutions. Corning is a DAS vendor and, now that they have SpiderCloud’s small cells, will be much more competitive in the industry going forward.
SpiderCloud is behind the scalable small cell system that allows mobile operators to provide coverage, capacity and cloud services (when there’s a LAN) to venues and enterprises. SpiderCloud Wireless CEO Mike Gallagher said in a statement, “Together we will continue to focus on expanding SpiderCloud’s customer relationships and augmenting our pioneering portfolio by leveraging the combined strength of two world-class product development teams.”
