Internet testing company Ookla acquires wireless network designer Ekahau

Companies’ combined capabilities to offer CRE owners superb wireless performance.

Ookla, a global leader in fixed broadband and mobile network testing applications, data and analysis, recently acquired Ekahau, a wireless network design and troubleshooting company. Coupled with Ookla’s acquisition of wireless data and mapping company, Mosaik, Ookla now possesses the Speedtest® app and Ekahau’s Wi-Fi monitoring and design capabilities to provide building owners with optimal wireless performance.

“We couldn’t be more excited,” Ekahau CEO Mika Hakala wrote in a company blog post. “At Ekahau, we pride ourselves on our easy-to-use and technologically superior solutions. We also truly value the relationships we have formed with our customers, technology partners, resellers, distributors and employees. It’s tremendously gratifying to join forces with a company that shares these same core commitments and beliefs.”

Currently, more than half a billion users around the globe initiate more than 10 million tests each day on the Speedtest® platform, which means Ookla has the most comprehensive analytics on worldwide Internet performance and accessibility. Ookla has become the go-to brand for anyone in the wireless industry that wants to see how their network is performing and at the same time is striving to enable the best network user performance.

As for Ekahau, the company was founded in 2000 to develop indoor location systems that were also known as RTLS (Real Time Location Systems). These systems were developed to track “tagged” assets or people and relied on current Wi-Fi access points on premises to calculate the locations on the tags. As the system continued to work well, Ekahau installed it thousands of different applications.

Along the way, a new set of customers approached Ekahau about purchasing the tools it created to deploy its indoor location system rather than the system itself. The company created a suite of Wi-Fi tools that proved to be powerful in hundreds of enterprise networks. So powerful in fact, Ekahau decided Wi-Fi should be its core business focus and has been since 2016. Since then Ekahau has attracted top talent in the algorithm development, software design and Wi-Fi technology fields to drive its focus.

The crop of new talent has created a number of solutions for Wi-Fi professionals including the Ekahau Sidekick™ Pro Pack. Together, the Ekahau Site Survey tool and the Ekahau Sidekick help customers build the most reliable wireless networks around the world, across all industries, project sizes, infrastructures and complexity levels.

“With all of the complementary technologies, industry knowledge, reach and mission of both companies, I feel the combination is so much more than the sum of the parts,” Hakala wrote.

As the acquisition moves forward, Ekahau looks to continue to build the same innovative, high-performance products its customers have become accustomed to since 2000.

“We have just supercharged our business,” Hakala wrote. “The acquisition will provide us with additional resources to increase production, speed time to market, further our commitment to customer service and invest in additional research and development. This allows us to provide the industry’s best Wi-Fi network design, optimization, and troubleshooting solutions.”
