Comic-Con fans didn’t need to worry about losing their cell reception at the San Diego Convention Center this year. Smart City Networks, the center’s exclusive telecommunications provider, successfully implemented its new distributed antenna system (DAS) created specifically for the center, which is designed to improve cell service and capacity, earlier this month, according to the convention center.
Hundreds of miniature antennas were placed at secure points throughout the center, according to convention center, and the antennas are connected to multiple networks, such as AT&T and T-Mobile.
Steel or concrete pillars and other architecture can cause gaps in coverage, but Smart City’s new DAS will supposedly seal them. It is said that the network is reliable and dead spots (no cell reception) no longer exist.
Smart City Networks, based in Las Vegas, has worked for two years to create this DAS. This technology provider focuses on serving convention, meeting and hotel venues.
According to Julia Slocombe, vice president of Western Region Operations for Smart City Networks, “this new system is going to make a noticeable difference for everyone who attends an event or convention at the San Diego Convention Center.”
“This was a massive upgrade,” said Slocombe, “but it reiterates our commitments to deliver exceptional experiences through technology and San Diego’s commitment to be one of the leading meeting and convention destinations in the world.”
The DAS was completed right before the San Diego Convention Center hosted Comic-Con on Thursday, July 20 through Sunday, July 23.
