What will 5G mean for your businesses?

5GThe impending arrival of 5G coverage and the increased gigabit download speeds that will come with it is one of the most talked-about trends in the telecommunications industry. While consumers can hardly contain themselves, it’s not out of the question for business owners to be excited about 5G as well.
There are numerous reasons why businesses can be excited about the rollout of 5G, but not surprisingly, one of those reasons is cost. Using fixed wireless access (FWA) to connect homes and businesses alike up to broadband will be less expensive than the standard connection methods. Previously, the shortage of a business case for operators stalled the FWA market, but 5G could get things going again, according to analysts, reports FireceWireless’ Tara Seals.
Researchers estimate the initial cost to set up last-mile connectivity could decrease by 40%, compared to Fiber To The Premises (FTTP) connectivity. Early estimates for service revenue connected to 5G-based FWA subscriptions are $1 billion by the end of 2019.
5G FWA will have a significant impact on how businesses that depend on connectivity work in other ways besides revenue as well, including more capabilities and increased work productivity, according to a recent Information Age report.
More Speed
Next to potential increased revenue streams, perhaps the most beneficial aspect of 5G is how much faster data can be transported. Companies like Verizon and AT&T are already conducting FWA technology trial runs, according to CED Magazine’s Diana Goovaerts. Verizon launched fixed wireless trials with 5G service in 11 cities earlier this year, while AT&T did one in in Austin that send high speed broadband with its DirectTV Now video product.
Data on demand
As businesses become more dependent on data, how quickly it gets from Point A to Point B becomes more crucial. File sizes continue to increase however and as the amount of content, and the quality of it, continues to expand people have more detailed data than they ever have had previously. The good news is more data is available to us, but that doesn’t mean it comes without challenges.
If 5G FWA does what it’s expected to however, those challenges will subside. Businesses will be able to move large amounts of data in a small amount of time. A full-strength 1 Gigabits per second (Gbps) connection can download a 5 gigabit file in less than 15 seconds.
Increased efficiency
More bandwidth will mean multiple users will be able to work on shared 5G networks without complex setups or extra equipment. If a staff member needs to move a large file while downloading from and using power cloud applications, they can do so without hindering their colleagues’ productivity. The improvement works at the office or remotely; the faster mobile connections will let employees work easier while they’re on the go and cloud use will drop significantly.
Quicker path to connectivity
5G will make getting connected much easier. Gone will be the days of digging up streets to expand infrastructure in an effort to gain better connectivity. Instead, users who are in range of a service point can just put an FWA router in the window, decreasing installation time significantly. Currently, a standard install can take anywhere between 2.5 to 4 hours if an Optical Network Terminal is available and up to 6 hours if one is not present.
This new process will let companies keep moving about their workday without disrupting or displacing their employees while expansion takes place.
Looking ahead
The rollout of 5G FWA will not only improve current solutions; the expectation is it’ll improve anticipated evolutions of those technologies as well, according to UK communications infrastructure firm Arqiva. Improvements that significant would benefit companies in all industries and consumers, too.
