Samsung Announces First 5G Modem Compliant with 3GPP Standards

Samsung Electronics recently announced that it has developed the Exynos Modem 5100, the industry’s first 5G modem that is compatible with 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Release 15 (Rel.15). The 3GPP Release 15 is currently the most up-to-date standard specification for 5G New Radio (5G-NR), or what is commonly being referred to as “5G”.

The modem is built on a power-efficient 10-nanometer process technology and also supports legacy radio access technologies into a single chip.

“The development of Exynos Modem 5100 that meets the 3GPP Rel. 15 standard is a big step forward to actually commercializing 5G mobile devices,” Samsung Electronics told Connected Real Estate Magazine. “As 5G is expected to be first deployed on existing 4G LTE networks, Samsung is well-positioned to help bring 5G quickly to the market with its demonstrated leadership in connectivity technologies.”

Samsung completed a successful over-the-air 5G-NR data cell test under a wireless environment using a 5G base station and a 5G end user equipment prototype embedded with the Exynos Modem 5100. The test simulated real-world cellular network conditions, which will help ensure quicker development and commercialization of 5G mobile devices that embrace the new modem. The company is also working with several global mobile carriers and partners to bring 5G mobile communications to the market faster.

The Exynos Modem 5100 can support sub-6GHz and mmWave spectrums specified in 3GPP’s 5G standard as well as legacy networks, including 2G GSM/CDMA, 3G WCDMA, TD-SCDMA, HSPA and 4G LTE with a single chip solution.

Since 5G is expected to be deployed over current network infrastructures intially, commercial implementation will benefit from the single-chip design that maximizes data transmission efficiency and reliability between other communication networks, according to the company.

“The modem’s single-chip design for multi-mode communication ensures efficiency and reliability that also contributes to accelerating 5G commercialization,” Samsung told Connected.

Additionally, the modem delivers a maximum downlink speed of up to 2-gigabits per second (Gbps) in the 5G network’s sub-6-gigahertz settings and 6Gbps in mmWave settings. These speeds are approximately 1.7 and five times faster than its predecessor’s data transfer speeds, respectively. Fast and stable data communications can also be secured within 4G networks with a 1.6Gbps downlink speed.

When 5G is deployed, its capabilities to transfer large-capacity data and real-time low-latency communication are expected to bring new user experiences in mobile, along with the Internet of Things (IoT), ultra-high resolution videos, holograms, real-time artificial intelligence and self-driving vehicles.

Radio frequency IC (RFIC), Envelope Tracking (ET) and power management IC (PMIC) solutions will be offered with the Exynos Modem 5100. Samsung says the modem will be available to customers by the end of the year.

“Exynos Modem 5100 will allow industry partners, including device manufacturers and mobile carriers, to deliver such services and applications to the market faster,” the company told Connected.
