JMA Wireless Launches TEKO Cell Hub

Node is the first solution to deliver virtualized enterprise multi-service capabilities for in-building needs.
Wireless communications solutions global leader JMA Wireless recently launched TEKO Cell Hub, a fiber connected node that’s neither a small cell or distributed antenna system (DAS) the company said in a release. Instead, Cell Hub uses fiber to deliver multiple licensed carrier bands and the new Citizens Broadband Radio Service (CBRS) spectrum in a single unit.
The new solution will work directly with the company’s recently announced XRAN™ technology, a 100 percent software baseband solution that operates on off-the-shelf servers. Together, these solutions create one of the most scalable, flexible and easy to deploy enterprise solutions in the industry today, JMA Wireless says. The technology was designed to address enterprises buildings’ unique needs and to streamline solution delivery.
“Cell Hub with XRAN is unlike any other solution,” Todd Landry, JMA Wireless Corporate Vice President of Product and Marketing Strategy said in a statement. “It not only uniquely addresses these companies’ present needs, but it’s designed to enable performance and services to support the evolving business environment, including a smooth transition path to 5G capabilities.”
Cell Hub differs from small cells, as it’s multi-carrier and multi-band. Its use of fiber allows a Cell Hub unit to connect to a standard server directly, which makes it easy to deploy, but still provide the necessary capacity to deliver high quality mobile performance.
“JMA Wireless’ Cell Hub is a clear example of emerging multi-carrier Distributed Radio Systems that can offer scalable coverage for middle sized enterprises,” Mobile Experts Principal Analyst Kyung Mun said. “By utilizing the new XRAN platform for their Cell Hub, they have essentially moved the DRS segment into the virtualized RAN world.”
How Cell Hub works is it uses a common fiber infrastructure that enables multiple units to connect to the XRAN server. Each Cell Hub provides 2X2 multiple input, multiple output (MIMO) with one watt of power, and Cell Hubs can be cascaded, or daisy chained, to easily scale up coverage and capacity as needed. When a DC power system that meets Class 2 in-building requirements is used, Cell Hubs are simple and cost effective to wire into existing or new buildings.
By using XRAN for its baseband processing, Cell Hub simplifies the expansion and adjustment capabilities with a simple software change. Its adaptable sectorization allows operators to have their own sector mapping and RF engineers can virtually eliminate the fight against signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) that small cells experience when they optimize in-building performance by further segmenting the sectors by tenant.
“Cell Hub with XRAN aligns with the new Distributed Radio Systems segment, but adds virtualized RAN to the solution,” Landry said.
Both Cell Hub and XRAN can be used with the TEKO DAS platform as a hybrid solution, which offers more flexibility to address different buildings’ unique needs, according to the company.
